When Should You Visit Zanzibar?
Zanzibar sits just south of the equator, which means warm temperatures and tropical humidity throughout the year. Average daytime temperatures hover between 27°C and 33°C regardless of the month, so there is never a bad time to visit in terms of warmth. The real deciding factor is rain.
The Dry Seasons (Best Overall Weather)
The long dry season runs from **June to October** and is widely considered the best time to visit. Skies are clear, humidity drops, and the trade winds (known locally as the Kusi) keep temperatures comfortable. This is prime season for snorkelling and diving thanks to excellent underwater visibility, and it is also when the island hosts the Zanzibar International Film Festival in July.
The short dry season from **December to February** is equally sunny and is Zanzibar’s warmest period. This coincides with European and American winter holidays, so popular beaches like Nungwi and Kendwa get busier and prices rise. If you can handle the heat and the crowds, the festive atmosphere and calm seas make it a wonderful time to be on the island.
The Rainy Seasons
The **long rains** arrive in late March and last through May. April is the wettest month, with heavy downpours that can last several hours. Many smaller hotels close during this period, boat trips may be cancelled, and some unpaved roads become difficult. However, the island is stunningly green, prices drop significantly, and you will have beaches largely to yourself.
The **short rains** fall in November, usually as brief afternoon showers that rarely disrupt a full day. This shoulder season offers a good balance of lower prices, fewer tourists, and mostly pleasant weather.
Best Months by Activity
- **Beach and swimming:** June–October, December–February
- **Snorkelling and diving:** September–March (warmest water, best visibility)
- **Kitesurfing:** June–September (strong, consistent Kusi winds)
- **Cultural tours:** Year-round
- **Budget travel:** April–May, November (lowest prices)
Our Recommendation
If you have flexibility, aim for **June, July, September, or October** for the ideal combination of great weather, reasonable prices, and thinner crowds. January and February are perfect if you want the warmest water for swimming and snorkelling and do not mind sharing the beach with other travellers.
